Description

This Messier Object, also known as NGC 3556, is a spiral galaxy located 30 million light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major at a declination of +56 degrees.  It is a magnitude 10.7 galaxy which spans 8 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 70,000 light years.

We are seeing this galaxy almost edge-on, at an inclination of 75 degrees to our line of sight. Dark thick dust lanes are prominent throughout the disk. Blue star clusters and pink HII regions are evident in the outer arms while the central disk has a yellowish color and appears to be barred.

My apologies if the size, color, and brightness of this object scared you a bit when first it appeared on your screen.  It is not quite the typical dim, obscure object that I normally image.  But my original M108 image from 5 years ago was desperately poor in quality and crying out to be updated.
